Pond Volume Calculator

It is very important to know the volume of your pond. You will need the volume in order to calculate things like, how much salt to add or how much medication to put in your pond when treating a sick fish, for example. It can also be very useful when selecting suitable equipment for your pond set up. Many pumps and filters are rated for a maximum pond volume and will not be able to do their job if they are fitted to a system where the volume of the pond is too large.

Use our pond water volume calculator below to see how much water your pond holds. Simply input the length, width, and depth of your rectangular pond or the diameter and depth of your circular pond. Select the measurement units you have used, meters or feet, and click calculate. The calculator will then give you the volume of your pond in both litres and imperial gallons.

If you have an irregularly shaped pond or want to use a different, more precise method keep reading below to see how to measure the volume of your pond using salt and measures of salinity.

If you have an irregular shaped pond meaning that the above method is difficult to use accurately on your pond, there is a clever technique to calculate your pond volume by adding salt to the water.

Before using this method, you should calculate a rough estimate for the volume of your pond using the method above as it can be dangerous to add too much salt to your pond.

To start with, measure the salinity of your pond using a salinity meter to get a base reading. Then add a known amount of salt to your pond. The recommended salt concentration for koi is 3 ppt which equates to 3kg of salt for every 1000 litres of water, so take the estimate for your pond volume and multiply it by 3 to calculate the amount of salt to add to your pond. Once you have added the salt, wait 12-24 hours and then measure the salinity of your pond for the second time. Input the initial and final salinity measurements along with the amount of salt added into our calculator below and you will see the exact volume of your pond.
